Health, Safety and Environmental trainee


Reports to: Health, safety and Environmental Director

Main Purpose of role

To provide an additional health, safety and environmental resource that would, in particular, enable the Health, Safety and Environmental Director to focus on strategic issues and explore new techniques and technologies.

Provide support to the existing Health, Safety and Environmental Advisors.

Principal Duties or Responsibilities

The trainee will work to improve their knowledge and skills in order to generate, promote and maintain a positive health, safety and environmental culture.

Provide support to the existing Health, Safety and Environmental Advisors.

Key tasks will involve:

  • Carrying out risk assessments and considering how risks could be cost effectively reduced and managed.
  • Carrying out COSHH, Noise, Manual Handling and HAVS assessments.
  • Producing Construction Phase Plans and site Safety Files.
  • Carrying out regular site visits to advise on and check health, safety and environmental conformity to legal and company standards.
  • Leading inhouse training with managers and employees.
  • Maintaining records of inspections and producing specialist reports.
  • Keeping records of accidents, incidents and near misses and producing statistics for the business.
  • Maintaining the health, safety and environmental section of the company website.
  • Keeping up to date with legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation and technologies that affect the company’s operations.
  • Assisting with periodic reviews of company health, safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Producing management reports, newsletters, safety alerts and bulletins.
  • Maintaining agreements with:
    • existing training partners
    • SMAS, CHAS, Constructionline
    • NVQ provider

Qualifications, experience and skills

Will have already achieved a general or construction NEBOSH qualification.

Be eligible for Associate status in the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

Be eligible for Associate status with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

Literate, numerate and possess IT skills.
